Lake Whitney has over 35 square miles of clear, blue water and 225 miles of shoreline. Rugged white limestone cliffs border much of the lake, providing a dramatic backdrop to the crystal blue water. Picturesque coves, often with small waterfalls, offer pleasant surprises to boaters throughout 23,500 acres of the lake. Lake Whitney was formed in the 1950's, when a dam was constructed on the Brazos River. The river was named "Rio de los Brazos de Dios" by early Spanish explorers, which means "The River of the Arms of God." This area offers an abundance of outdoor recreation and features almost 40 square miles of parks and public lands.

Lake Whitney Public Library
Begun in the 1960's, and now supported by the city, the Lake Whitney Public Library provides free services to all residents living within county boundaries. Patrons can search among over 25,000 items, including books, DVDs, audio books, music CDs, movies, and videos. The children's area has a large selection of books, along with fun crafts, suggested reading materials, Accelerated Reader list, and an AP list for High School and Middle School students. Besides fiction and non-fiction books, the adult area includes a reference section, large print books, materials on local history, and a genealogy section. Other programs active at the library include the Interlibrary Loan program, a Book Club and GED classes. Six computers and wi-fi service are available to everyone. Computer and internet classes are available, along with study rooms. Copying and fax services are also available.
